HACK RED HOOK 2016 will bring together designers, engineers, coders, community planners, and inventors to design, create and install useful and interactive objects around the Red Hook neighborhood

Hack Red Hook will bring together designers, engineers, coders, community planners, and inventors to design, create and install useful and interactive objects around the Red Hook neighborhood. Hardware and fabrication services will be provided.  This hackathon is an opportunity for you to use ingenuity and creativity to give life to your brilliant ideas and build creative solutions for an underserved community. It is free to participate, and we will provide food, snacks, and killer prizes. 

These services will be staffed and available to you for the entirety of the hackathon:

  • Wood and metal fabrication
  • Laser cutting and etching
  • Vinyl cutting
  • 3D printing 

Gear provided to each team (as requested):

  • Raspberry pi
  • LCD screen/LED panel
  • LiPo Battery
  • Solar Panel
  • Waterproof Clear Enclosure
  • GSM and/or WiFi enabled Microcontroller
  • Soldering stations with basic hardware and prototyping components
  • Free access to IoT APIs for your projects

SCHEDULE

  • Friday: 6pm - midnight
  • Saturday: 10am - midnight, and we will be open and staffed (including fabricators!) overnight
  • Sunday: 10am - 4pm (entries must be submitted by 4pm); judging will start at 5pm

Eligibility

All hackers must be over 18 or provide parental/guardian permission upon check-in, download permission form here

All entrants must sign a waiver upon check-in in order to participate

Requirements

The projects designed and developed at Hack Red Hook will benefit specific needs in the Red Hook community. Your inventions will be placed in and around these locations. All designs should be centered around solving the problems faced by the community of Red Hook. All inventions will be judged together, but no category will be privileged above another. 

Prize categories will be announced at the event and may include but will not be limited to:

  • Red Hook Initiative
  • Just 4 Kicks: Interactive Public Art/Games/Fun
  • Environmental
  • Transportation

How to enter

We are looking for people to get involved and compete on teams during the hackathon. We want coders, builders, planners, inventors, and people who like to take ideas and make them happen.
