Red Hook Initiative suggestions for hacks
Hey folks! A couple of ideas for how to best serve Red Hook Initiative:
1. Employment Tracker!
Our young adult program (for 19 - 24 year olds) is required to report to our funders on how long our participants keep jobs once they secure them. We are asked to check if a young person is still employed at these intervals:
3 months post-placement
6 months post-placement
9 months post-placement
12 months post-placement
18 months post-placement
24 months post-placement
We also need to know:
- Have you gotten a pay increase or decrease? If yes, how much?
- Have you gotten an increase or decrease in hours?
- Have you earned a promotion or change in title?
- Are you currently happy in your job or would you like to find a new one?
If we could develop an app that could be used through Red Hook WIFI young adults could subscribe to the app and then be prompted to answer those questions according to their start date of a job. RHI would develop some kind of incentive system (ie if you check in to the app and report on your status we mail you a RT metrocard) or something like that.
Design us this app or check in tool that keeps track of a young person and prompts them to answer these questions to report back to RHI.
2. Mapping Community Impact
Similar to the situation above, RHI's high school program has over 75 youth who work at RHI. They learn a skill and then teach their family, friends, or neighbors. We have struggled to capture just how many people each Youth Leader reaches with the messages and impact of their work.
What if, every day that Youth Leaders come to work, they "clock in" for work but then also log any community impact they have had since they last came to work. They could be asked two or three questions on an ipad, app or laptop:
- Have you used your skills gained at RHI to assist or teach anyone at your school?
- Have you used your skills gained at RHI to assist or teach anyone on your block?
- Have you used your skills gained at RHI to assist or teach anyone in your home?
etc.
The address of their school, home, and block would be pre-programmed in so that when they say yes, it could map a dot on a map to show the "ripple" of their work. Over time, they could see the mapping of all of their efforts, could look at maps of everyone in their group, and could look at maps of all of the Youth Leaders at RHI. We could also share these maps to better tell the story of the reach of our work.
